Seeking an Assistant Farm Manager

DESIRABLE SKILLS:

• a minimum of 3 years of farming experience
• tractor operation
• equipment operation and maintenance
• mower, rototiller, manure spreader, loader, post-hole digger, sprayer
• carpentry basics, repairs
• record keeping
• livestock care
• crop management

PERSONAL SKILLS:

• experience as a leader or manager
• observant and good problem solving skills
• good communications skills
• positive attitude, organized thinker

RESPONSIBILITIES CAN INCLUDE:

• Day to day management of 2-3 person crew (this involves coming up with the field to-do lists and harvest lists)
• Working with farm manager to schedule the weekly flow and prioritize tasks
• Organizing monthly meetings with crew
• Seeding, transplanting and managing wash/pack
• Some tractor field work
• Nutrient management and pest management scouting

The farm has operated for 42 years as an orchard and diverse vegetable and animal operation. Our CSA was the first in Maine and has just completed its 34th season. We currently grow vegetables on 2-5 acres, have a CSA, farm store, and herd of sheep.

We are looking for a committed individual with experience that can work with self-initiative, compatibility, clarity, and positive thinking.

Our vision prioritizes raising vibrant food for our community, maintaining healthy soils and access to the aesthetic value of the farm. The right match can evolve into a long term situation compatible with our transition vision, including a long-term lease arrangement or lease to own.

Our work week goes from Monday-Friday and days are 7am-4:30pm, including a 15-minute paid break and 60-minute unpaid lunch break. Rotational weekend duty as needed for farmer to have a little time off. This will be negotiated as needed.

Position starts in March/April and runs through November/December. Pay is $18-20/hour, depending on experience. Other benefits include: access to farm produce, other products from the farm store at 10% off and paid vacation or sick time relative to days worked after 3 months. 8 hours/200 hours worked.
